The Boston Prep Phoenix varsity boys basketball team captured the Massachusetts Charter School Athletic Organization (MCSAO) championship title for the second time in three years this past weekend. In the tournament contested at UMASS-Boston, the Phoenix boys won an exhilarating double overtime game against KIPP on Friday evening, survived a last minute attempt for the win by Match on Saturday, and delivered their signature performance of the season to clinch the title on Sunday against Academy of the Pacific Rim. Senior and team captain Charles Valbrun was voted the MCSAO MVP for the season for the second year in a row.
Co-coaches Mike Lester and Brian Harvey attributed the team’s success to perseverance and learning to rely on one another’s strengths. With many strong players, the team was defined by balance and shared effort. “We are proud of the team for building a belief in one another,” said Coach Lester. “They really embodied our virtue of perseverance, never accepting they were out of a game all season. They’ve learned a lot this season and deserve their success.”
